Courier News article about the ILEHC
Our fate is in your hands!
When we founded the ILEHC nearly two years ago, I never in my wildest nightmare envisioned the enormous struggle that lay ahead in order to keep this rescue up and running. I don't think anyone knew at that time that the economy was about to tank and what the ensuing fallout would be, particularly for the non-profit sector.
I write to you today because the ILEHC has come to a critical crossroad, and the very fate and existence of this organization is quite literally in your hands. More

Illinois-bred Scooter Roach returns home for retirement
The long and illustrious racing career of Illinois-bred Scooter Roach (Mi Cielo - Heroic Dreams, by Mr. Leader) came to a story-book close last week when the 11-year-old gelding was permanently retired from racing and into the care of the Illinois Equine Humane Center (ILEHC) in Elgin, IL.
Scooter Roach retires as one of Illinois' most successful state-breds with 15 wins from 88 starts and $842,754.00 in total earnings. During a career spanning nine years, the IL-bred champion won or placed in 10 stakes races including wins in the 2002 Hawthorne Derby (GIII-T), 2004 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap (GIII-T), 2004 Milwaukee Avenue Handicap, and the 2005 John Bullit Stakes. More
Let 'em eat hay fundraiser
With the first cutting of the 2010 hay crop only a few short weeks away, the ILEHC is asking for your help to secure as much hay as possible to feed our rescued and owner relinquished equine guests.
First cutting hay generally offers the highest nutritional value of the year's hay crop and because it also offers the greatest yield it is usually able to be purchased at a fair price, therefore, now is the ideal time for the ILEHC to purchase the hay we need for the remainder of the year. More
Newest arrival
The LONG anticipated arrival of Lulu's baby is finally over! Lulu delivered a bouncing baby boy at about 7 am this morning. This guy literally hit the ground running - he actually began trying to stand the second his feet hit the ground! He was up and nursing on his own within 5 minutes of setting foot on earth!
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each and everyone for your support of the ILEHC and our efforts to help horses in need. It is because of your compassion, love, and support that we were able to rescue Lulu last June from the kill-pens at Shipshewana. Had we not rescued Lulu, both she and her amazing baby colt would have died in a Canadian slaughterhouse. Words cannot express how grateful I am to each of you for helping to save the Lulu and her baby!
Our newest arrival is going to need a name, so if you have any suggestions, please send us an email. Having been born on April 15 (tax day) I think it would be cool to somehow incorporate the word "tax" into his name.
Donations to help with the ongoing expenses of caring for Lulu and Son can be made electronically on our website or by sending a check to: ILEHC - 9N763 Kendall Road - Elgin, IL 60124.
Congratulations everyone...VERY well done!
SLAUGHTER BAN SAVED
Illinois State Representative Jim Sacia has withdrawn his bill (HB 4812) that would have repealed the 2007 Illinois ban on horse slaughter.
Thanks go out to all of you and your efforts to ensure that the horse slaughter ban in Illinois remains!
