Welcome to the
Illinois Equine Humane Center
Our fate is in your hands!
When we founded the ILEHC nearly two years ago, I never in my wildest nightmare envisioned the enormous struggle that lay ahead in order to keep this rescue up and running. I don't think anyone knew at that time that the economy was about to tank and what the ensuing fallout would be, particularly for the non-profit sector.
I write to you today because the ILEHC has come to a critical crossroad, and the very fate and existence of this organization is quite literally in your hands. More

The long and illustrious racing career of Illinois-bred Scooter Roach (Mi Cielo - Heroic Dreams, by Mr. Leader) came to a story-book close last week when the 11-year-old gelding was permanently retired from racing and into the care of the Illinois Equine Humane Center (ILEHC) in Elgin, IL.
Scooter Roach retires as one of Illinois' most successful state-breds with 15 wins from 88 starts and $842,754.00 in total earnings. During a career spanning nine years, the IL-bred champion won or placed in 10 stakes races including wins in the 2002 Hawthorne Derby (GIII-T), 2004 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap (GIII-T), 2004 Milwaukee Avenue Handicap, and the 2005 John Bullit Stakes. More
With the first cutting of the 2010 hay crop only a few short weeks away, the ILEHC is asking for your help to secure as much hay as possible to feed our rescued and owner relinquished equine guests.
First cutting hay generally offers the highest nutritional value of the year's hay crop and because it also offers the greatest yield it is usually able to be purchased at a fair price, therefore, now is the ideal time for the ILEHC to purchase the hay we need for the remainder of the year. More

Because of the incredible support of ILEHC members, supporters, and horse lovers throughout the country, we were able to save several Thoroughbred horses at the STC Racing Dispersal Auction in Mount Vernon, IL. Offered for sale were 65 horses ranging in age from foals to aged broodmares and stallions. Many of the horses who were perfectly healthy, sound, and useful, were sold for just peanuts. More

A group of Illinois horse owners and equine
advocates have announced plans to soon open the doors of a newly
founded humane shelter and adoption center for horses. The Illinois
Equine Humane Center, NFP (“ILEHC”) mission is to provide humane
treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive
homes for all of Illinois’ unwanted equines, regardless of breed. The
group also seeks to educate and raise awareness for responsible equine
ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis. More
