Illinois Equine Humane Center

Mission Statement

To provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Illinois’ unwanted equines, regardless of breed.

To educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis.

Please note: Please call the Illinois Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Welfare at 217-782-6657 to report animal abuse or neglect. At this time, the ILEHC does not plan to investigate these types of complaints as the Department and several other non-profits in Illinois perform this very necessary service.

Instead, we plan to focus our resources on providing another very necessary service—helping owners place unwanted horses in new homes. Sometimes this will mean working with owners to identify appropriate outlets for their horses and sometimes this will mean accepting horses into our shelter before adopting them into new homes.

The ILEHC is a 501(c)(3) organization and as such, any and all suggested fees may be waived in whole or in part for those eligible individuals as determined by the Board of Directors on a case by case basis.
